Poverty Simulation
Thirty to seventy-five participants role-play the realities of life in the State of Poverty. The characters represent diverse, but accurate circumstances of families. This three hour program of experiential learning provides a multitude of possibilities. Participants role-play the lives of people from various kinds of families. Your fate may change overnight with a “luck O’ the Draw” that bring you unexpected income or challenging expenses.
Volunteers create a village of stores and agencies with which the families will interact for four 15-minute “weeks”. The community includes welfare office workers, grocers, police, pawnbrokers, food pantry staff, employment interviewers, and others who combine to create the local economy.
Facilitated discussion allows the group to take the experience even farther, fostering understanding and giving insight into life in poverty.
