Helping Schools Help Students by collaborating to maximize achievement in mathematics, science and technology.

The Mecosta Osceola Math & Science Center is one of 33 regional centers in the Michigan Mathematics and Science Centers Network.  These Centers provide leadership, curriculum support, professional development, and student services to local districts across Michigan.  Centers also serve as a resource clearinghouses for educational materials and work to foster community involvement in the areas of mathematics, science and engineering.  These services help support the delivery of high quality mathematics and science education for the students of Michigan. Seven Centers provide an Accelerated High School Program.

Are you a student interested in Math and Science?

One of the programs to consider is the Mecosta-Osceola Math/Science/Technology Accelerated High School Program.

  • The MSTC is a cooperative program with students from all the high schools within the Mecosta-Osceola Intermediate School District. (Big Rapids, Chippewa Hills, Crossroads Charter Academy, Evart, Morley Stanwood, and Reed City.)

  • Students apply to the program and when accepted, spend a part of their day for all four years of high school, attending class at the Center located on the campus of Ferris State University.

  • The program emphasizes the connections between math, science and technology.

  • Students conduct research, connect to the Ferris State University campus, learn math and science through hands-on activities and exciting field studies.

  • Math and science classes are accelerated so students complete high school math and science graduation requirements by the end of 10th grade.

  • Beginning in 11th grade, students take college courses at FSU. After completing the MSTC, students are successful in college as they have already had a successful college experience.

  • Students conduct research in 10th grade and projects are shared at the Regional Science & Engineering Fair and the Michigan High School Math & Science Symposium. Some students may go on to events at the national and international level.

MOISD Math/Science/Technology Center General Information

  • Students take part in career exploration starting in their ninth grade year, which extends into their 11th grade year when they are applying for college applications and scholarships.  Students have the opportunity to explore a career with doctors, engineers, architects, surveyors, veterinarians, lawyers, business people and many more.  This help students see aspects of potential careers and introduces them to careers they may not have considered.

  • The MSTC staff is very dedicated and has experiences from a variety of settings.  Students can always get extra help, but better yet, enjoy learning in new ways and at a faster pace surrounded by other students who share a desire to work hard and succeed.

  • Students also learn through exciting field studies! Field studies add a depth of understanding to the curriculum and can take place at: local rivers and fields, Isle Royale, Alaska, and Hawaii.

  • Freshman Orientation is one of the most important field trips.  It is a local trip where students (who come from different middle schools) get a chance to get to know each other and participate in team building activities.

  • Admission to the MSTC is by competitive application.  Students take a standardized test; submit their Math, Science and English grades from 7th and 8th grade, and three recommendations.  Scores are tallied and the top 50% are interviewed. Typically around 80 students apply and 28 students are accepted into the freshman class.  Admission is based solely upon the above criteria with no exceptions or guarantee of seats.

  • Students with a strong work ethic, good study habits and a desire to be challenged are successful in the MSTC.  Students who enjoy algebra, science and technology are encouraged to apply.
